Single Review: Biffy Clyro – Stingin’ Belle

The kings of Scot-rock have returned with ‘Stingin’ Belle’, the first track off of their highly-anticipated double album ‘Opposites’.

In the build-up to the release of ‘Opposites’, the trio had promised that the upcoming record would bring back ‘lost’ fans from their Blackened Sky’ days.

A promise that seems to have been broken as ‘Stingin’ Belle’ only briefly reminisces at their former work with an enormous headbangin’ riff to open proceedings, before blossoming into the modern Biffy we all know and love. With zany lyrics and a huge melodic chorus, this is what they do best, so why change a winning formula?

Proving in the end to be an incredibly patriotic track, Biffy bring the bagpipes in to finish things off. Outros seem to be the band’s forte over the past few years with ‘Bubbles’ and ‘That Golden Rule’ the obvious choices, both have spectacular endings and ‘Stingin’ Belle’ is no different. The inclusion of bagpipes is a gamble, but one that has paid off, resulting in an epic (and welcome) return to the rock scene.

You’ll definitely hear them coming.

4 Stars.
