Album Review: My Chemical Romance – Conventional Weapons: Number One

Earlier this year My Chemical Romance‘s Frank Iero announced that the US rock giants had completely shelved an albums worth of songs before eventually coming up with their critically-acclamied fourth studio album ‘Danger Days’.

So beginning in October we will be releasing 2 songs a month for 5 months. 10 songs in total from the Conventional Weapons sessions we did back in 2009. We hope you enjoy these time capsules, and that they may shed a little more light on how and where Danger Days came from, and maybe even where the future of MCR might be heading. It was the best of times, it was the worst of times…and now it is finally time to lift the veil on Conventional Weapons.

Play them loud and without judgement.

Frank Iero, Sept 2012.

First out of the blocks from the history books of Conventional Weapons are ‘Boy Division’ and ‘Tomorrow’s Money’ or collectively – ‘Number 1’.

‘Boy Division’ gloriously relives the punk days of ‘Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge‘ with it’s fast and furious pace and guitars set to raw overdrive as Gerard Way viciously blasts through the song. Cue an ridiculously heavy breakdown towards the end of proceedings and it makes for one of the band’s finest tracks.

‘Tomorrow’s Money’ briefly reminisces ‘I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love‘ with talk of vampires before transcending into ‘Danger Days’ territory, boasting an infectious Western-tinged rock n’ roll riff that could easily slot in with the likes of ‘Na Na Na‘ and ‘Vampire Money’.

It’s funny to think that My Chemical Romance, one of the most controversially ’emo’ bands of the past decade, unquestionably have it in them to be the world’s greatest punk rock band.

4 Stars.
