Superman vs Batman: The Dark Knight Shortlist Rises

The latest rumours regarding who will don Batman’s iconic cape and cowl in Zack Snyder‘s Man Of Steel sequel are getting bigger by the day.

Inquisitr reports that former Dark Knight Christian Bale was offered a staggering $50 million to reprise his role for the Superman vs Batman film. Their source is Vince Russel, author of the ebook ‘Beyond Batman: The Unauthorized True Story of Christian Bale and His Dark Knight Dilemma’, who says:

“As the bat signal still glimmers with fervor above Bale’s Hollywood marquee, Christian Bale’s experience as the Batman of our generation is about to prove more inescapable than he expected. With three of the most successful Batman films in Hollywood history under his belt, Christian Bale is now facing extraordinary pressure to become The Dark Knight once again.”

Of course, this is more speculation than hard-news, with Bale already denying any involvement in the sequel.

The two latest names to be put in the hat are Scott Adkins (X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Expendables 2) who is an phenomenal martial artist, but his acting skills are nothing to be desired. The other name is Pirates of the Caribbean & Lord of the Rings actor Orlando Bloom, who is apparently the studios number one choice.

If Bloom was cast as Batman, I think he’d be out of his depth. Bloom is not Batman, nor is he Bruce Wayne. I’m struggling to imagine him really conveying the mental torture and physical toil that Bats has to go through, from the murder of his parents to overcoming waves of enemies such as the Joker, Scarecrow, Bane and many more.

Sure, Orlando is talented, working exceptionally well when he has somebody to bounce off of and bond with (Legolas and Gimli, Will Turner and Captain Jack Sparrow), but I hope this rumour is dead in the water soon. If anything, Bloom could make a fantastic Nightwing, but Joseph Gordon-Levitt would probably have something to say about that.

Bear in mind, I admittedly questioned Christopher Nolan‘s casting choices of Heath Ledger as Joker and Anne Hathaway as Selina Kyle/Catwoman, so I’ve been wrong to judge before, so very wrong.

The wait goes on; who is the hero that Gotham deserves?

Meanwhile, the role of Superman’s nemesis Lex Luthor is reportedly up for grabs too, with Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad) and Mark Strong (Kick-Ass, Green Lantern) rumoured to be in amongst the favourites to play the evil genius. Personally, I think Benedict Cumberbatch or Michael C. Hall would be perfect Lex Luthors.
